Snow White Isopods Porcellio laevis are a stunning, highly sought-after morph, loved for their clean, bright pure white colouration, smooth glossy bodies, and bold active nature — standing out beautifully against soil, leaf litter, or wood in any enclosure. These are large, robust isopods, growing up to 2.3–2.5cm, with a sleek uniform appearance (only very rarely showing tiny faint specks) and lively, day-active behaviour that makes them fantastic to watch. Extremely hardy, fast-breeding, and very adaptable, they are perfect for beginners and experts, excellent as a cleanup crew and a striking display species for bioactive terrariums, vivariums, and reptile enclosures. They work hard breaking down waste, shed skin, and decaying matter to keep your substrate healthy and ecosystem balanced — one of the most popular white isopods for sale in the UK!
📖 Care Guide
- Temperature: 16°C–26°C, tolerant of minor shifts; most active and breed best at 20°C–24°C
- Humidity: 55%–75% — always have a moisture gradient: one side damp with moss or soil, the rest drier; avoid waterlogging
- Substrate: Coco fibre, organic soil, or bioactive mix, 3–6cm deep, mixed with plenty of leaf litter and rotting wood
- Food: Main diet = oak/beech leaf litter + decaying wood; supplement with veg, fish flakes, dried shrimp, and calcium like cuttlebone — extra protein is key to prevent nipping and support colony growth
- Enclosure: Well-ventilated tub or tank with lots of hides like cork bark or moss; breed rapidly and form large, active colonies quickly
- Very easy to care for, low maintenance, safe with most larger reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates — note: best kept with similar-sized species as they can outcompete smaller isopods
