Dairy Cow Isopods Porcellio laevis are one of the most popular, iconic, and recognizable isopod species available, loved for their stunning high-contrast black and white spotted pattern that looks exactly like a dairy cow. These are large, fast-growing, and incredibly active isopods, growing up to 2.5cm in size, with smooth glossy bodies and a bold, lively nature that makes them a joy to watch. Extremely hardy, fast breeding, and very adaptable, they are the number one choice for beginners and experts alike, widely considered the best cleanup crew for bioactive terrariums, vivariums, reptile enclosures, and isopod cultures. They work tirelessly to break down waste, leaf litter, shed skin, and decaying matter, keeping your substrate healthy and your ecosystem perfectly balanced — easily the best value and most popular isopods for sale in the UK!
📖 Care Guide
- Temperature: 15°C–32°C, very tough and tolerant of big temperature changes
- Humidity: 50%–70% — provide a damp and dry gradient; keep one corner moist with moss or soil, rest drier
- Substrate: Coco fibre, organic soil, or bioactive mix, 3–6cm deep, mixed with plenty of leaf litter and rotting wood
- Food: Main diet = oak or beech leaf litter + decaying wood; supplement with vegetables, fish flakes, dried shrimp, and calcium such as cuttlebone — protein helps colony growth
- Enclosure: Well ventilated tub or tank with lots of hides like cork bark or moss; they breed rapidly and build huge, active colonies in no time
- Very easy to care for, low maintenance, safe with all reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates — perfect starter species!
