Armadillidium vulgare “Germany” • German Common Isopod

A robust, highly adaptable and popular line of the classic Armadillidium vulgare, selected for its consistent large size, good vigour, and uniform dark grey‑black colouration. Growing up to 18–20mm, they are true “roly‑polies”, rolling completely into a tight smooth ball when threatened. Very hardy and forgiving of small changes in conditions, they breed reliably and make an excellent cleanup crew as well as a great starter species for new keepers. Perfect for bioactive vivariums, reptile enclosures, or dedicated culture tubs — they process leaf litter and waste efficiently to help maintain a healthy, balanced substrate. A solid, easy‑going variety well suited to the UK climate!
📖 Care Guide

• Temperature: 15°C – 26°C; ideal range 18°C – 22°C — does well at normal room temperature

• Humidity: 50% – 65% — provide a clear damp/dry gradient; keep one side slightly moist, the rest dry and well‑ventilated

• Substrate: Coco fibre, topsoil, or mixed substrate, 3–5cm deep, enriched with plenty of oak/beech leaf litter and rotting hardwood for calcium

• Food: Main diet = dried leaf litter and decaying wood; supplement with vegetables (carrot, sweet potato, squash), fish flakes, dried shrimp, and a calcium source like cuttlebone or crushed eggshell

• Housing: Well‑ventilated plastic tub or tank; add plenty of hides such as cork bark, flat bark pieces, or egg cartons — they feel safest in dark, sheltered areas

• Growth & breeding: Steady breeders; females produce small broods regularly, and juveniles mature in roughly 4–5 months under good conditions
