ARMADILLIDIUM PALLASII "ORANGE"
Armadillidium pallasii "Orange" is a large, hardy pill isopod with a wide, flared body shape. This color morph has been bred to have a bright orange or amber body instead of the usual wild grey color. Like other pill bugs, they roll into a tight, perfect ball when they get scared. They are quite large and chunkier than standard woodlice, making them an excellent display animal for a setup.
WHO IS THIS SPECIES FOR?
This isopod is ideal for total beginners who want an easy starter pet, as well as collectors who want something large and colorful. They are very bold and spend a lot of time walking around on top of the leaves and cork bark during the day, so they are great for watching. They also work well as a cleanup crew in temperate or semi-arid bioactive setups, since they are tough and handle humidity changes easily.
SPECIES OVERVIEW
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Armadillidium pallasii "Orange"
ORIGIN: Originally from Southern Europe and coastal Greece, with this orange color selection stabilized in captivity.
DIFFICULTY: Very Easy / Beginner
CARE & ENVIRONMENT PARAMETERS:
TEMPERATURE RANGE: 18-26°C. They do perfectly at standard household room temperatures.
HUMIDITY & MOISTURE: 50-70% humidity. They need a simple moisture setup where about a third of the bin is kept damp with wet sphagnum moss, while the rest stays dry. Make sure the container has good ventilation so the air does not get stagnant.
DIETARY NEEDS: Their main food is decaying leaves and rotting wood. You should also feed them protein once or twice a week, like fish flakes or dried shrimp. Always keep a piece of cuttlefish bone or limestone in the setup so they get enough calcium to grow their shells.
BEHAVIOUR & BREEDING HABITS
ACTIVITY LEVELS: High. They are not shy and can be seen out foraging and climbing bark day and night.
REPRODUCTION RATE: Moderate to Prolific. They are very reliable breeders that will steadily grow into a big colony once they settle in.
WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE?
SIZES: You will get a mix of different sizes, mostly growing juveniles and young adults. Fully grown adults can reach around 2.0cm in length. Small newborn babies are not intentionally shipped, though some might be born during transit.
PACKAGING: The woodlice travel in small ventilated plastic tubs filled with damp sphagnum moss. These tubs are packed safely inside a cardboard box with paper or cardboard padding to keep them safe from temperature changes.
