ARMADILLIDIUM PALLASII ISOPODS

Armadillidium pallasii is a remarkably robust, impressively built, and large pill woodlouse species that brings a fantastic heavy-armoured presence to the hobby. Celebrated for their wide, swooping lateral skirts and stocky, rock-like body profiles, wild-type individuals display a deep matte-grey, slate, or jet-black coloration. Their carapaces are often coated in tiny, subtle bumps that enhance their rugged, primitive look. As true pill woodlice, they excel at defensive conglobation, smoothly rolling up into a tight, flawless armoured ball when they feel startled or handled. They offer an amazing alternative to exotic tropical rollers, providing a heavy-bodied look while remaining exceptionally resilient.

WHO IS THIS SPECIES FOR?

This species is a perfect match for both absolute beginners wanting a zero-stress pet and advanced hobbyists seeking a massive, highly visible European woodlouse. They have a very bold, confident, and non-cryptic nature, regularly clustering openly around bark crevices or foraging right on top of the leaves rather than staying permanently buried in the dirt. Because they possess thick, heavily calcified carapaces, they are highly tolerant of minor husbandry slips, making them an excellent choice for a bulletproof starter culture. While their larger size and affinity for grazing means they are best kept as a dedicated display pet rather than a biocustodian for sensitive live plants, their robust build makes them an excellent and highly visual addition to any temperate collection.

SPECIES OVERVIEW

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Armadillidium pallasii
ORIGIN: Central and Southern Europe, with prominent, distinct regional populations originating from the Greek island of Corfu and the rocky coastlines of Croatia.
DIFFICULTY: Very Easy / Beginner

CARE & ENVIRONMENT PARAMETERS:

TEMPERATURE RANGE: 15-28°C. They are remarkably temperature-resilient, thriving flawlessly at normal household room temperatures and easily managing local seasonal fluctuations.
HUMIDITY & MOISTURE: 60-75% humidity. They require a distinct, well-defined moisture gradient rather than a uniformly damp or saturated enclosure. Maintain a layout where roughly 25% to 33% of the floor contains a damp sphagnum moss hydration station, leaving the remaining sections dry but covered. Good cross-ventilation and airflow are absolutely vital to keep their environment healthy and prevent stale, stagnant air.
DIETARY NEEDS: Their primary diet must consist of a deep, endless supply of organic deciduous leaf litter and crumbling white-rotted hardwood. They have a great appetite for supplemental nutrition and should be offered protein updates once or twice a week, such as high-quality fish flakes, dried shrimp, or minnows. As heavy shell-builders that grow to large sizes, keeping a permanent, accessible source of calcium like cuttlefish bone or natural limestone chunks in the enclosure is critical for safe molting.

BEHAVIOUR & BREEDING HABITS

ACTIVITY LEVELS: High. They have an incredibly confident disposition, regularly seen scaling cork bark pieces, gathering in groups, and exploring the surface of the enclosure.
REPRODUCTION RATE: Prolific. Once they settle into their enclosure and acclimate, they are reliable, steady breeders that will consistently build up dense colony numbers all year round.

WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE?

SIZES: You will receive a healthy, robust mix of sizes ranging from growing juveniles to established young adults, creating the perfect demographic balance to kickstart reproduction immediately. Fully grown adults are one of the larger species in the genus, reaching lengths of up to 2.0cm to 2.5cm. Newborn mancae are never intentionally counted or shipped, though some may emerge naturally during transit.
PACKAGING: The isopods are packed with great care inside well-ventilated plastic travel tubs layered with damp sphagnum moss to ensure stable transit moisture. These containers are securely nested inside a sturdy shipping box padded with eco-fill, paper, or thick cardboard to completely insulate the culture from movement and extreme outdoor temperature spikes.
