ARMADILLIDIUM GRANULATUM "MAGIC POTION"

Armadillidium granulatum "Magic Potion" is a large, heavily built pill isopod that features a highly popular color mutation. Instead of the standard dark slate-grey color, this morph has a translucent white shell splattered with irregular black splotches and bright yellow spots down its back. True to its name, the carapace has a rough, granulated texture covered in tiny bumps. They are a true rolling species that curls up into a tight, perfect ball when threatened, looking like a colorful marbled bead in the enclosure.

WHO IS THIS SPECIES FOR?

This isopod is excellent for beginners who want a hardy, easy-to-care-for pet, as well as advanced collectors looking for a stunning color morph of a giant species. They are very bold and spend a lot of time out foraging openly on top of leaves and scaling cork bark, making them highly visible and fun to watch. They also make a fantastic cleanup crew for temperate or Mediterranean bioactive setups, as they are very tough and easily tolerate occasional dips in humidity.

SPECIES OVERVIEW

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Armadillidium granulatum "Magic Potion"
ORIGIN: Originally from the Mediterranean region, with this specific white, black, and yellow mutation isolated and stabilized in captivity.
DIFFICULTY: Very Easy / Beginner

CARE & ENVIRONMENT PARAMETERS:

TEMPERATURE RANGE: 18-26°C. They do perfectly at standard room temperatures without needing extra heating.
HUMIDITY & MOISTURE: 50-70% humidity. They require a distinct moisture gradient rather than a soggy tropical environment. Keep roughly one-third of the enclosure damp with a patch of wet sphagnum moss, leaving the remaining two-thirds dry. Good ventilation is important to ensure the air stays fresh.
DIETARY NEEDS: Leaf litter and rotting wood make up their everyday diet. You should supplement them once or twice a week with easy protein sources like fish flakes or dried shrimp. Always keep a piece of cuttlefish bone or limestone in the bin so they have a constant source of calcium to grow their thick, bumpy shells.

BEHAVIOUR & BREEDING HABITS

ACTIVITY LEVELS: High. They are exceptionally bold woodlice that are regularly out exploring their habitat during both the day and night.
REPRODUCTION RATE: Moderate. They are reliable, steady breeders, but they establish at a measured pace rather than exploding in numbers instantly, giving you plenty of time to manage the colony.

WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE?

SIZES: You will get a robust mix of sizes ranging from growing juveniles to young adults. Fully grown adults are a large species, easily reaching between 2.0cm and 2.5cm in length. Fragile newborn babies are not intentionally packed, though some may be born while in transit.
PACKAGING: The woodlice travel in small ventilated plastic tubs filled with damp sphagnum moss. These tubs are packed safely inside a cardboard box padded with paper or cardboard to protect them from temperature shifts and shifting.
