Why Did My Entire Starter Culture of 10 Isopods Completely Disappear into the Soil?

Dropping ten new isopods into a freshly made plastic tub usually results in them vanishing completely within an hour. For weeks, the enclosure looks like an empty box of leaf litter, moss and a few cork barks. You might see the odd isopod every now and then under a cork bark or a bold one running through quickly. Problems like this are especially common if you like to start your new colonies in larger tubs (I start in 12L, avoids having to constantly upgrade). It is especially common with fossorial species, like Cubaris and Armadillidium, in which a lot of those species (some, not all) will spend a lot of their time in the substrate. It is less common when you start with a larger count (30+) and/or it is a more bold, surface dwelling isopod (Porcellio, Porcellionides for example)
Do not panic and start digging up the substrate to count them. This total disappearance is normal, and it is actually a really good sign that your isopods are thriving in their new home, it means that your isopods are reacting correctly to their environment and executing their natural survive instincts.
SUVIVAL INSTINCTS OF A SMALL POPULATION
A tiny group of 5-20 individuals lacks the security of a large colony. To a handful of isopods, an open space under bright room lights signals immidiate danger, their wild instincts tell them that staying on the suface makes them their prime targets for predators. A fresh breeding bin also lacks the familiar pheromones and waste chemistry of an established colony, making the new territory feel inherently unsafe.
To protect themselves (again, this is not the case for all species), their first priority upon leaving the travel tub is to find the deepest cover and the highest moisture zone available. If your substrate mix is properly loose and deep, they will tunnel straight down to the bottom layers where humidity levels are most stable. Ten small pods have a microscopic physical footprint. Inside a standard 6-12L plastic tub, a starter culture can easily live, feed and moult entirely out of sight for months without ever needing to risk coming to the surface during the day.
SETTLING IN AFTER SHIPPING
Transit through the UK postal system subjects these small inverts to constant stress, temperature fluctuation and shifting air pressures. By the time you open the box, your isopods are exhausted and possibly dehydrated. Because they breathe through delicate, modified gills on their undersides, surface air that is even slightly dry or drafty causes them immediate physical distress. Burying themselves deep into the dampest corners of the soil allows them to recover in a stabilized micro-climate
Shipping stress also frequently triggers an immediate molting cycle. When an isopod sheds its exoskeleton, it does so in two halves over several days; during this period their new skin is very soft, defenceless, and highly prone to rapid drying. To stay alive, they will find a secure spot deep in the wet side of the tub and remain completely motionless until their new armor hardens properly. Digging them up during this fragile window can easily cause fatal injuries.
WHY DOES THE FOOD APPEAR TO NOT GET EATEN?
New keepers often expect their new culture to immediately swarm powdered diets, dried shrimp, or fresh vegetables placed on the surface. When that food sits empty and inevitably grows a layer of fuzzy white mold, the keeper assumes that the colony has crashed. In reality, a ten-count culture requires an incredibly minuscule amount of food to survive
The baseline of any proper isopod environment is decaying organic material, specifically rotten hardwood and dried leaf litter. This material is not just for decoration; it is their primary daily food source. Your new isopods are almost certainly eating the softened, decaying undersides of the leaves or chewing on buried bits of rotting wood directly in the substrate layer, because their main food source is available right where they are hiding; they have zero biological reason to climb up to the surface floor to sample the extra treats you left out. Putting excessive supplemental food into a fresh, invisible bin simply invites grain mites and fungus gnats because the tiny resident population cannot consume it fast enough. Instead, make sure to leave the supplemental foods in very small amounts
READING THE INDIRECT SIGNS OF LIFE
The worst thing you can do in this invisible phase is continuously turning over the soil to search for your bugs. Constantly disrupting the substrate destroys the tiny humidity burrows they have constructed, stresses out soft molting individuals, and can directly cause a fragile starter culture to crash. Instead, you need to learn how to check on your colony without destroying their habitat.
Instead of digging, look through the clean sides or bottom of your plastic tub. If the tub is resting in a dark room, you can shine a torch through the bottom plastic layer and spot individuals resting against the lower wet corners. Look closely at the leaf litter on the surface over the course of a week. If you notice tiny, jagged holes or skeletonised leaf veins that were not there before, your culture is actively feeding at night while you are asleep. True peace of mind in this hobby comes from the keeper's patience; if you maintain the moisture gradient correctly, you simply have to trust the biology of the animal and leave the lid closed.
