How to Stop Fungus Gnats in Isopod Tanks (Easy Fix)
Share
Anyone who keeps isopods or bioactive setups has had to deal with Fungus Gnats at some point. Those little flying bugs are so annoying! They seem to appear out of nowhere and drive you crazy. But don’t worry, you don’t need to use harsh chemicals that might hurt your pods. I’ve got a simple method that works every time.
The main reason they appear is because things are staying too wet on top. Gnats love laying their eggs in damp soil. The easiest fix is to let the top layer dry out properly. I know it sounds scary because you don't want to dry your isopods out, but you just need to change how you water.
Try the 'damp corner' method. Only spray or water one specific area of the tank and leave the rest completely dry. The isopods will just move to the wet bit when they need to, and the gnats will die off because they have nowhere to lay eggs. It usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks to clear them completely.
Another trick is to add a layer of dry leaf litter or even a bit of dry sand on top. This acts like a barrier and stops them coming up from the soil. Also, make sure you aren't overfeeding them. Any old food lying around just attracts more bugs so take anything uneaten out after 24 hours.
Trust me, once you get the moisture balance right, they go away and don't come back. Your colony will be much happier and you won't have tiny flies flying around your room anymore!
