How to Create the Perfect Bioactive Isopod Tank Setup
Share
Thinking about starting a bioactive setup? It’s actually easier than you think and looks so much better than a plain tank. I’ve set up quite a few cultures now, and there are a few key things that make all the difference.
First things first, you need the right base. The substrate is super important because that’s where your isopods will live and breed. I always use a mix of organic top soil and leaf litter. It holds moisture well but doesn't go soggy, and it gives them loads to eat and hide in. Oak and beech leaves are my favourite because they break down slowly and last ages.
Next, you need things for them to climb under and hide. Cork bark is the best, it lasts forever and creates little micro-climates inside the tank. You can also add rotting wood or moss. The more clutter you have, the happier your pods will be and the faster they will breed. They hate being out in the open, so give them plenty of dark spots.
When it comes to moisture, you don't need the whole tank soaking wet. I always do the 'dry side, wet side' method. Keep one corner nice and damp so they can drink and moult, and let the other side dry out. This stops mould growing and keeps the air fresh. Dairy Cows especially love this balance because they are tough enough to handle the dryer areas.
Feeding them is easy. They eat pretty much anything vegetable based - carrot, cucumber, leaves. But don't forget protein! Once a week I give them fish flakes or dried shrimp. This stops them getting hungry and nibbling anything they shouldn't. Keeping them well fed is the secret to a big healthy colony.
